"The Dark and Bright Room of CAMERAer" is an exhibition guest-curated by artist Nomura Hiroshi, introducing the Camera and Photography Collection of the Yokohama City owned by the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino in Japan.

The collection was formerly owned by an American businessman, Thurman Naylor (1919-2007). It includes over 12000 items, including various cameras, photographs, literature, and related materials. Ranging from important works in the history of photography to souvenirs related to photographs he encountered while traveling, the collection reflects the point of view of an individual collector.

The guest curator, Nomura Hiroshi has been revealing the nature of photography through his own artworks that blur the line between reality and fiction, such as the "Doppelopment" series in which his only daughter is photographed with another daughter, who exists only in a photograph by using the composite technique. In 2018, he published a comic book “CAMERAer - People who became cameras” based on the 3 frame comic “On Photography” that he had released on SNS, in which various thoughts and feelings about photography were conveyed by the characters in the comic book that evoked sympathy and created sensations among the readers.

In this exhibition, the characters from the "CAMERAer" will take the visitors through Nomura's playful works and historical cameras, photographs and related materials selected from the collection by Nomura's unique perspective. In addition, for this special version in China, the exhibition includes works by six contemporary Chinese artists, A Dou, Chen Xiaoyi, Chen Zhe, Li Jun, Luo Dan, and Zhang Xiao. Featuring important works from Camera and Photography Collection of Yokohama City as the main component, the exhibition facilitates collaborations among works from different countries and time periods. It aims to expose various aspects and charm of the medium of photography, that we are familiar with in the context of everyday life.
